Description

In the cartoon, the 1860 presidential candidates for the four political parties are featured. Abraham Lincoln is shown balancing on one end of a rail that is propped on a rock labeled "Abolition Rock." The rail extends over a "Salt River" from a bank labeled "North" to another bank labeled "South." At the other end of the rail, Horace Greely falls. Immediately behind Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas balances on a tightrope labeled "Non Intervention" and holds a boat oar labeled "Squatter Sovereignty." Behind Douglas, John C. Breckinridge rides on the shoulders of Joseph C. Lane; the latter walks on a tightrope labeled "Slavery Extension." In the background, Candidates John Bell and Edward Everett of the Constitutional Union Party stand on a bridge labeled "Constitutional Bridge."
