St. Mary Basilica
Cyndi C. Parker
For the MFA's Historic Preservation course titled 'Building Materials Conservation', this is a case study of a historic building. Built in 1842, St. Mary Basilica is a landmark building for the small town of Natchez, the oldest city in the state of Mississippi. It’s one of the oldest religious buildings in the south, the first cathedral in the state, consecrated by the Roman Catholic church, and remains the state’s only Basilica, of which there are less than one hundred in the country. This research paper explores its history and examines its architectural significance, as well as its restorations throughout its lifetime.
