Description

Portrait of King Umberto of Italy in uniform and medals

Biography

Umberto I succeeded to the throne of Italy after his father Victor Emmanuel II in 1878. During the Grants’ visit to Italy, the royal family was in mourning for the death of the King’s father, Victor Emmanuel II. Because of this death, the Grants meeting with the Italian royal family was limited. However, once General and Mrs. Grant arrived in Rome, an official of the King of Italy called on the Grants’ hotel. The Grants enjoyed a tour of the city that had been arranged for them. Later, the Grants enjoyed a state banquet with the King and Queen of Italy.
