Description
Portrait of Maria Pia, Queen of Portugal pictured standing in dark dress and veil
Biography
Maria Pia was the daughter of Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy. In 1862, she married King Luis I of Portugal becoming his Queen Consort. Queen Maria Pia had two sons Carlos I and Alfonso. An audience was arranged for the Grants to meet both the King and Queen later at the Royal Palace during their visit to Portugal. The Grants were also invited to dine with the King and Queen. During this reception, Queen Maria Pia presented her two sons to Mrs. Grant. Mrs. Grant wrote in her memories that the Queen looked so young she appeared to be the older sister of her sons. She was very interested in the Queen and enjoyed conversation with her.
