Transcription

The State of Mississippi, Lowndes County, charged John W. West with violating the Sabbath in 1860. Specifically, he is accused of employing two enslaved men, the property of Joseph W. Harvey, in labor on a Sunday by driving a cow and a calf which was not in the ordinary househould of daily necessity or other work of necessity or charity.
