Description
Ten pages of original court documents from the State v. Matthews case dating 1840. The case was heard in the State of Mississippi Lowndes County Circuit Court.
Transcription
The State of Mississippi, Lowndes County, charged Benjamin Matthews with compounding a fellony in not prosecuting two enslaved men for fellonously breaking into the dwelling of Benjamin Matthews on April 13, 1840 and stealing 200 pounds of bacon and 200 pounds of pork, a value of $40 dollars. Enslaved persons were the property of Robert Hairston.
