Description
Bill of sale for Violet, aged 28-30 years, sold by James J. Rowan to Samuel Wakefield, both of whom are slave traders who operated at the Forks of the Road slave market.

PAGE ONE Know all men by these presents that I James J. Rowan of the City of Natchez State of Mississippi for an in consideration of the sum of three hundred dollars to me in hand paid by Samuel Wakefield the receipt of which I do hereby acknowledge [[?]] granted bargained bred & delivered and by these presents do grant bargain sell & deliver unto the said Wakefield a certain negro woman slave named Violet aged about 28 or 30 years. To have and to [[?]] to him & his heirs & assigns forever, [[?]] from the claims of all persons [[?]] hereby warranting the said slave Violet to be sound in body and mind and a slave for life. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and signed this 18th May A.D. 1833. J. J. Rowan (seal) PAGE TWO State of Tennessee Memphis [[?]] For [[?]] consideration of the sum of three hundred Dollars to me in hand paid by Silas Lillard [[?]] in fact of George I. Garion of the Parrish of Concord in State of Louisiana the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge I do hereby sell, assign and transfer unto the said George I. Garion and to his heirs & carrying and my right and [[?]] in the [[written?]] Bill of sale. In witness whereof I have hereunto sit my hand deal at Mississippi this 22d day of May 1833.
