Photography documenting the people of Vicksburg and Warren County and their environment from the late 1930s to the 1980, taken or collected by Charles Johnson Faulk during his long career as a photographer and journalist. The photographs encompass a variety of topics, including natural disasters, car accidents, sports, politics, crime, education, segregation, and cultural events.
Charles Johnson Faulk, Jr. was born on September 13, 1915, in Yokena, south of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Faulk joined the staff of the Vicksburg Post-Herald in 1935 as a cub reporter, served briefly in the Navy during World War II, then returned to the paper where he became City Editor. In 1954, Faulk and his staff won a Pulitzer Prize for their efforts in producing the paper despite the devastating tornado that hit Vicksburg on December 5, 1953. In 1957 Faulk went to work in public relations for the State Highway Department, and in 1965 returned to journalism as the Managing Editor of the Managing Editor of the Vicksburg Evening Post, eventually becoming executive editor. Faulk retired in 1985 and died in 1990.
