Description

An image of the Carter Building on the corner of Main and Front Streets in Hattiesburg is pictured in this black and white postcard. A sign reading "Hays and Field" is on the roof of the building. The Carter building, built 1904-5, is one of the icons of downtown Hattiesburg. Named after John Prentiss Carter, who served as Mississippi’s lieutenant governor from 1904 to 1908, the 100-year-old building has been completely renovated to house multiple lofts and retail and office space on the first floor. The six story building stands at the corner of Main Street and Front Street. Carter was a Hattiesburg banker and attorney. In 1973 the building was sold to Faulkner Concrete Pipe Company and became known as the Faulkner Building. Recently, its original name was returned to the building. An inscription is written across the bottome half of the image above the title of the card. An inscription is also written sideways on the back of the card and is addressed to Mr. E. H. Sojourner in Slidell, Louisiana. The card is postmarked Hattiesburg, Mississippi, June 15, 1908.
