Zenas Preston Papers

The Zenas Preston Papers digital collection is a collection of selected digitized materials from the Zenas Preston Papers collection. This digital collection includes Preston's diary that details the plantation on Lake St. Peter across river from Natchez, Mississippi and refers to plantation life of the period: slaves, crops, levees and floods, diseases, prescriptions, taxes, road work, weather.

    Zenas Preston

    Diary kept by plantation owner Zenas Preston from 1850-1853. Preston's plantation, Leftwich, was situated on Lake St. Peter in Tensas Parish, Louisiana, and Preston describes frequent trips to Waterproof, Saint Joseph, and Natchez via the steamboats on the Mississippi River. The diary includes details about levees and flooding in the parish, planting concerns, and details about the births, illnesses, and deaths of his slaves.
