This list of historical sites compiled by Eunice J. Stockwell was submitted to the Mississippi Historical Commission upon request by James W. Silver, the chair of the committee to recommend historical sites for consideration of receiving historical markers. Stockwell suggests places such as Natchez as the Capital of the Mississippi Territory, several places in Jefferson county, Oakland College, the Old Capitol building in Jackson, and Beauvoir in Biloxi, She provides some of the history of these places as reason for suggesting them.
