Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to determine to what degree school staff understood the benefits and outcomes of Career Technical Education programs and how this level of understanding impacted Career Technical Education program enrollment in five selected schools in Mississippi. The levels of understanding keyed in on three pivotal factors. First, perceptions of the availability and accessibility of Career Technical Education programs to students in the participating schools were measured. Second, the perceptions of the benefits students reap from being involved in Career Technical Education programs were examined. Next, the perceptions of the benefits Career Technical Education programs provide to the community were evaluated. Finally, the Career Technical Education program enrollment numbers were assessed as compared to the perceptions. The research design for this study was a correlation study, and the researcher used descriptive statistics along with frequencies and percentages to analyze the data. One-way ANOVA tests were used to test the hypotheses. The population for the study was the faculty and staff of five selected Mississippi schools. These schools were selected based on their size and Career Technical Education enrollment percentages. 80 school staff participated in the study. The study’s findings revealed that there were no significant differences in participants’ perceptions regarding the impact of Career Technical Education program involvement on dropout rates, student awareness of Career Technical Education programs, and parental awareness of Career Technical Education programs. However, there were significant differences in the areas of postsecondary education skills, academic performance of students enrolled in Career Technical Education programs and accessibility of Career Technical Education programs to all students. When examining these differences alongside Career Technical Education program enrollment percentages, the researcher noted these could explain the enrollment gaps.
