Abstract

There has been an increased interest in renewable energy opportunities in Mississippi in recent years but limited educational material on this topic and a lack of knowledge among residents on various renewable energy options. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to 1) conduct a comprehensive review of renewable energy educational resources and 2) increase knowledge of renewable energy in youth through the development of a new statewide Extension program. The environmental scan resulted in 45 usable responses from 117 potential participants, and programmatic details were received for 54 Extension programs or other forms of educational material. Evaluation results from the new Extension program ‘Powering Local Communities’ showed that 82% of participants (n=55) increased their knowledge of different types of biomass, and 76% of participants (n=50) increased their knowledge on how biomass can be used to produce electricity and the benefits of using biomass to generate energy.
