Abstract
This study aimed to examine faculty adoption of the Canvas LMS at a public university through the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) framework. Survey data were collected from faculty across multiple colleges within the university and were used to explore the predictive power of the UTAUT2 constructs including hedonic motivation, facilitating conditions, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, habit and behavioral intention. In addition to this, disciplinary differences along with discipline-specific needs were also considered in order to better understand adoption patterns. The results of this study indicated habit, hedonic motivation, facilitating conditions, and the demographic variable of race and ethnicity all significantly predicted behavioral intention to adopt and use the Canvas LMS. Additionally, further analysis revealed that STEM faculty emphasized the integration of specialized tools and complex functions, whereas humanities faculty valued better communication features. These findings contribute to the literature on technology acceptance in higher education by showcasing the role of autonomy, user experience, and discipline-specific needs when it comes to LMS use and adoption.
