Abstract

What is leadership? The goal of this research is to develop leaders, but what does that mean? It is true that leadership is needed at every level in an organization, and a leader does not need to be at the administrative level of the organization but can lead from any role and any level in the organization. Everyone has their own style of leadership that needs to be developed. The research explored different styles and theories of leadership and focused on implementing a Character Strength-based framework of leadership. Through this research, identified topics will be presented to participants in the Mississippi Library Leadership Institute to aid them in forming their unique leadership style. This information is key in training the next generation of leaders, as one needs to know what makes a good leader. Research has shown that the qualities of a good leader have migrated from personal character traits to competencies and are drifting back to the character traits of the individual. This shift in leadership focus lends one to believe that a balance of both competencies and character is needed for effective leadership. One aspect that has been observed in the research is everyone has their own unique experiences they bring to the leadership table, which will shape who they are as a leader and how they lead in the situations encountered in their tenure with the organization. By developing a library leadership institute that can be effective in allowing the participants to discover who they are as individuals and as leaders, it will be effective in developing leaders.
