Abstract

Iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) is a common problem throughout many areas of the United States where soils consist of calcareous parent material, including the Black Prairie region of Mississippi. Soybeans deficient in iron may exhibit interveinal chlorosis, reduced photosynthesis, and yield loss. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate: 1) the effects of eight selected management strategies often used in the southern U.S. on their ability to reduce IDC visual symptoms and increase grain yield in non-irrigated soybeans, 2) the relationship between soil water tension (SWT) and IDC, and 3) the ability of vegetative indices, soil apparent electrical conductivity, and grain yield to delineate IDC-prone areas in production fields. Findings will inform IDC management strategies for southern U.S. producers and improve site specific management decisions.
