Abstract
This study examined the effectiveness of physical and virtual three-dimensional (3D) fossil models compared to traditional two-dimensional (2D) photographs in an introductory physical geology lab at Mississippi State University. Eleven laboratory sections (N= 183 students) completed a relative age dating activity using one visualization format: 2D photographs (Control Group), 3D printed physical models (Experimental Group 1), or 3D virtual models (Experimental Group 2). Students completed Pre, Post 1, and a delayed Post 2 survey measuring conceptual knowledge and perceptions of the lab activity. Repeated measures ANOVA results indicated significant knowledge gains over time across all groups. However, no statistically significant differences were found among visualization formats. Student perception and enjoyment data showed evolving positive preferences towards 3D instructional formats. Findings indicate that while 3D models do not significantly increase knowledge gains compared to 2D materials, they can serve as an effective and enjoyable instructional visualization tool within geoscience education.
