Abstract
Visual memory requires rapidly encoding and binding spatial and non-spatial features into coherent representations. However, it remains unclear whether non-spatial features are directly bound to each other, or whether they are only linked through their shared spatial location. We first show that colors consolidated twice as fast as shapes. We then test what happens when the consolidation of a colored shape is interrupted after the color information has been consolidated, but before shape has had a chance to be consolidated. If non-spatial features are directly bound to each other during consolidation, then the entire object should be disrupted by the mask. However, if color and shape are bound to their location but not to each other, then the mask should interfere with shape processing while leaving color intact. When colored shapes were cued with location, a mask interrupted shape processing but spared color. When cued by color, participants only accurately reported an item’s shape if its location was also recalled. These findings provide evidence that, during consolidation, visual features are bound to their shared location but not directly to one another.
