Description

Oral history; interview with Clarence Devane Dorman, conducted on July 26, 2012, at Mr. Dorman's home in Starkville, Mississippi. Mr. Dorman was born in 1930 in Lansing, Michigan, and died on October 18, 2012, at his home in Starkville. He came to Starkville and Oktibbeha County in 1935 when his father was hired at Mississippi State University. He first came to Mississippi State to work at the age of 12, mostly field labor for the agronomy department, which was then headquartered in Lloyd-Ricks. During his academic career, he and his mother graduated from the same class with Bachelor's degrees in 1953 , his being in Agriculture. He also earned an additional Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1968. Also in 1953, Dorman served for two and a half years as an Army Aviator during the Korean War and was stationed in Nuremburg, Germany. Beginning his career at one of Starkville's prominent banks in 1957, he retired from 37 years of service there as Vice President. His father, Dr. Robert Clarence Dorman, is the namesake of Mississippi State University's Dorman Hall. Here, Devane sheds some light on the man whose name is commemorated on this important building in the Agricultural College. Dorman grew up on the MSU campus and has many memories of it, as he, his father, and his mother all worked for and received degrees from Mississippi State. He also reflects on some of the well-known and influential people who worked and taught many years ago in the Lloyd-Ricks Building.
