Abstract
After the Spanish-American War, a series of U.S. Naval officers governed the island of Guam, having complete authority over the local residents. The development of agriculture was a main focus of the Naval Government throughout the pre-World War II era. The United States Department of Agriculture operated an experiment station on the island from 1909 to 1932, and its work was continued on a smaller scale by the Root Agricultural School and Farm. Although these entities did not lead to the desired agricultural transformation, they did provide some unique opportunities for a few members of the local CHamoru population. This article provides an overview of the CHamoru employees of the experiment station and their role in its successor.
