Description
The Civil War-era carte de visite features a caricature portrait of William H. Seward, Secretary of State during the Lincoln administration. In the cartoon, Seward is pictured wearing ancient Roman-era clothing. In his proper right hand he is shown holding a rolled document bearing the words "STATE DEPARTMENT." The CDV's cardboard mount appears to be 20th century product.
