Description

The Civil War-era carte de visite features a caricature portrait of Gideon Welles, the United States Secretary of the Navy during the Lincoln administration. The cartoon depicts Welles as Father Neptune (his nickname). Welles stands in front of an ocean scene and holds a trident in his proper right hand. The CDV's cardboard mount appears to be 20th century product.
