Description

The medal's obverse design depicts two ironclad ships, the USS Monitor and USS Merrimack (renamed the CSS Virginia), engaged in battle. On the reverse, Confederate and United States flags are pictured intersecting at the top of the medal. Several rifles appear behind the flags, and the image of an eagle is placed at the center of the intersection. At the medal's bottom, a decorative border lines the edge.
