Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana
 

Artifacts

The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana consists of approximately 12,000 artifacts, statuary, prints, paintings, broadsides, ephemera, photographs, philately, collectibles/miniatures, and numismatics. Materials are housed in 20 map case drawers, 30 cartons, and a variety of loose statuary, prints, and paintings. The collection also includes nearly 100 original manuscripts and the Claude Simmons collection which consists of approximately 12 bankers boxes of Lincoln related materials and scrapbooks. There are also approximately 15,000 books, journals, and pamphlets separated into two collections: the Lincoln Book Collection and the Civil War/Collateral Book Collection.

    The hand-colored lithograph depicts a scene from the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Confederate battle lines are featured at the image's left, while Union forces are shown on the right. Canons are shown firing toward the Confederate army. This copy of the lithograph has the border edges removed and has been adhered to a wooden plaque. The title information has been pasted to the plaque's verso. The documentary information that originally appeared beneath the image does not survive.

    The lithograph depicts a scene from the Abraham Lincoln mourning ceremony in New York's City Hall. Lincoln's body is prominently on display in the rotunda of City Hall as viewers file past. Black curtains drape the scene. A series of mourning ceremonies took place following the death of Lincoln, which occurred over the course of three weeks at fourteen locations:Albany, Baltimore, Buffalo, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Harrisburg, Indianapolis, Michigan City (Indiana), New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. (White House and Capitol) before arriving in Springfield, Illinois on May 3rd.

    The color lithograph depicts the Fall of Richmond, when Grant overtook the city in April 1865. During the event, Jefferson Davis, his cabinet, and other Confederate defenders fled the city on the Richmond and Danville railroad. In the image, the city is shown from the river. Multiple fires blaze throughout the city as a long train of coaches, horses, and soldiers evacuate over the bridge.

    Lithograph depicting Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession that took place in New York. The New York public viewing of Lincoln's body took place on April 24 and 25, 1865. In the image, soldiers are shown walking in the street on foot. Sixteen horses are shown pulling Lincoln's funeral car. Both the horses and car are adorned with black cloth.
