This black and white illustration is of Francis W. Pickens, a political Democrat and Governor of South Carolina when that state became the first to secede from the United States. Pickens is depicted as wearing a dark suit, vest, and tie with white shirt. His name is captioned beneath the illustration. The illustration is within volume three of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
