This is a portrait of Sam Houston, the governor of Texas, seated, wearing a dark suit and a broad-rimmed hat with a cane in his right hand. The citation beneath the portrait reads "Dag by B. P. Paige, Wash. D. C. Eng. By J. C. Buttre, New York" and what appears to be Sam Houston's signature is below the portrait. The portrait is within volume one of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
