Description

This black and white illustration is of Leonidas Polk, a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and founder of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States of America, who resigned his ecclesiastical position to become a major-general in the Confederate States Army. Polk is depicted as wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with a high collar that is lined with stars. The artist is identified along the bottom of the illustration and Polk's signature is depicted beneath the illustration. This illustration is from volume five of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
