Description

This is a black and white illustration of Rear-Admiral Silas H. Stringham, an officer of the United States Navy who commanded the Atlantic Blockading Squadron at the beginning of the American Civil War. Stringham is depicted as standing with his right hand gripping his belt and his left hand resting beside his sword. He's wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with shoulder boards on the shoulders and embroidered strips on the cuffs of his coat. "Rear-Admiral Silas H. Stringham" is captioned below the illustration. This illustration is from volume five of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
