Description

This black and white illustration is of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, a Confederate general (1861–1863) during the American Civil War, and became one of the best-known Confederate commanders, after Robert E. Lee. Jackson is depicted as seated on a chair in front of a tent in full miliary uniform with a sword in his left hand, resting against his thigh and a hat in his right hand, resting on his knee. Tree branches can be seen resting against the roof of the tent and a box is at the bast of the tent pole behind Jackson. Jackson's signature is depicted below the illustration and "From the original painting by Nast in the possession of the publishers" is at the bottom of the page. This illustration is from volume six of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
