Description

This black and white illustration is of David Dixon Porter, a United States Navy admiral in command of the Mississippi River Squadron, which cooperated with the army under Major General Ulysses S. Grant in the Vicksburg Campaign. Porter is depicted as wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with epaulettes on both shoulders and a long beard on his face. There is some shading behind him in the illustration. The engraver is named along the bottom edge of the illustration and Porter's signature is depicted beneath. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
