Description

This black and white illustration is a map of Vicksburg, Mississippi with indications of routes taken during the first Vicksburg Campaign. The map also describes the terrain of the area where the campaign took place, identifying areas as "Hilly and Broken," "Recently cleared", or "Oil Fields" and also identifies landmarks such as the Yazoo River, Drumgould's Bluff, Haynes's Bluff, and the old bed of the Mississippi River. The map is on page 132 of volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay and is captioned "First Vicksburg Campaign or Chickasaw Bayou, Dec. 27, 1862-Jan. 3, 1863". The book title, "Abraham Lincoln" is at the top of the page. Text on the page beneath the illustration is a note clarifying what one of the routes identified on the map is referring to.
