Description
This black and white illustration is of Samuel F. Du Pont, a rear admiral in the United States Navy who played a major role in making the Union blockade effective in the American Civil War, but was controversially blamed for the failed attack on Charleston, South Carolina in April 1863. Du Pont is depicted in a dark, double-breasted military uniform with shoulder boards and dark tie. Du Pont's name is captioned below the illustration. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
