This black and white illustration is of General James A Garfield, a lawyer and Civil War general and the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881 until his death six months later—two months after he was shot by assassin Charles J. Guiteau. The illustration is from volume eight of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
