Description

This black and white illustration is of Thaddeus Stevens, a member of the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania and a fierce opponent of slavery and discrimination against black Americans, Stevens sought to secure their rights during Reconstruction, leading the opposition to U.S. President Andrew Johnson. Stevens is depicted wearing a dark suit, vest and tie with a white shirt. The engraver, G. E. Perine, is names along the bottom edge of the illustration and Stevens' signature is depicted below along with a typed caption of his name. The illustration is from volume eight of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
