This black and white illustration is a Map of the Battle of the Monocacy, fought on July 9, 1864, about 6 miles (9.7 km) from Frederick, Maryland, as part of the Valley Campaigns of 1864 during the American Civil War. The map indicates positions of the battle though no key or interpretation is included. "Battle of the Monocacy" is beneath the map and text from chapter seven of the book below the map. The illustration is on page 166 from volume nine, in pages 470-471 of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
