This black and white illustration is of Ulysses S. Grant, an American Commanding General who led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War in 1865 and politician who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Grant is depicted in profile wearing a dark suit. The illustration is in an oval set withing a rectangle. Grant's name is captioned beneath the illustration with "From a photograph taken from life" captioned beneath it. The illustration is from volume nine of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
