This black and white illustration is of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, a historic town in Jefferson County, West Virginia, United States, in the lower Shenandoah Valley. The illustration depicts a body of water surrounded by trees, hills, and foliage. A structure and a small watercraft are depicted in the water and two people are depicted on the banks to the left of the water. The artist is named beneath the corners of the illustration and "Harpers Ferry" is captioned near the bottom of the page. The illustration is within volume two of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
