recto, bottom: "UNION ARTILLERY MEN PREPARING A REDOUBT JUST BEFORE THE BATTLE AT FAIR OAKS, VA. (May, 1862). Fair Oaks was one of the battles fought by Gen. McClellan (Peni-/nsular Campaign) in his attempt to capture Richmond and also to dislodge Gen. Johnston's hold on the Potomac River. The Union Army failed to capture Richmond and on/ July 11th, Gen. Henry Halleck was appointed General in Chief of the Union Armies. After suffering 15, 000 casualties (the Confederates lost 20,000) he ordered the Army of the Potomac/ withdrawn. The Battle of Fair Oaks was indecisive (11,000 casualties), but when Johnston was wounded he was replaced by Robert E. Lee. Talking about his wound and replacement/ Johnston said: "The shot that struck me down is the very best that has been fired for the Southern cause yet."
