Description
Photo reproduction of a cartoon depicting the Republican party at odds after the nomination of Abraham Lincoln for president in 1860. In the cartoon, Charles Sumner literally releases a cat (i.e., the Spirit of Discord) from a bag labeled "REPUBLICAN BAG." The cat jumps for Horace Greely, editor of the New York Tribune. Lincoln is shown defending Greely with a rail. William H. Seward and Henry J. Raymond, editor of the New York Times, are also pictured.
