Description

Forty-six pages of original court documents from the State v. Mary case dating 1861. The case was heard in the State of Mississippi Lowndes County Circuit Court.

Transcription

The State of Mississippi, Lowndes County, charged Mary, an enslaved woman, with the murder of her child Kate on November 28, 1860 by throwing the child into a well. Both were the slaves of A. D. Murphy. Other enslaved persons summoned to testify included Peter, Andy, Jim, Albert, Belton, Rose, Jane, Gracy, Caroline, and Solomon. The jury found the defendant not guilty.
