Four pages of original court documents from the State v. Mahan case dating 1863. The case was heard in the State of Mississippi Lowndes County Circuit Court.

Transcription

The State of Mississippi, Lowndes County, charged John Mahan with default, or failure to appear, in the State's case against Elijah Brothers in 1863. Specifically, Mahan was called to the Court to give testimony on behalf of the State against Brothers for suffering slaves to go at large and trade as freeman. Since Mahan did not appear he was ordered to pay one hundred dollars. A writ, or scire facias on witness, was issued against Mahan to appear in Court again in March 1864 to show cause why said judgement should not be made absolute against him.
