James Franklin Buchanan begins his life history with a letter to his daughter, Harriet Ann Buchanan, explaining his reasons for writing the history and offers a genealogy of their family. The history goes on to include anecdotes from various periods of Buchanan's life, including early childhood, high school, college, his work as a County Extension Agent, his time in World War II, his marriage to her mother, Margaret, and his travels. The history also includes photographs of his time overseas during World War II and photocopies of his high school and college diplomas, his parent's marriage license, notable letters he'd received, his Army discharge papers, and certificates for various work he's done throughout his career.
