The collection consists of the papers of James Franklin "Frank" Buchanan from 1907-1991. The papers are divided into four sections: family papers, photographs, professional papers, and school papers. Materials heavily represented include correspondence, datebooks, genealogy notes, photographs school notes, work notes, and some World War II items (letters, photographs, and personal account).

The inscription on the back identifies the location as being Dijon, France, December 1944 where James Franklin Buchanan stayed.

The cover of this greeting card features three women in period dress gathered around an open hope chest in front of a fireplace. The wording at the bottom reads "For your Hope Chest" and the inside wording reads "I'd hate to think of your Hope Chest without a gift from me, I send this with a wish for joy and send it cheerfully!". No inscription is included. An accompanying card with the image of people on the street among trees and huts has "Mollie" written in all capitals at the bottom.
