Description
This color postcard features the old Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island, a D shaped structure with an American flag pole in the center and three smaller buildings next to it. The title across the top reads "MC-8--Old Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast." The back of the postcard identifies the item as a postcard and provides publication information as well as indication for postage stamp placement. The description in the upper left corner reads "Built by Union Forces during the War Between the States, the old Fort was used to hold 5,860 Confederate prisoners under negro guards."
