Description

This postcard features a color illustration of a view of Jefferson Military College, Washington, Mississippi near Natchez. Uniformed students can be seen sitting on shaded benches attached to the trunks of large trees and standing in doorways. An American flag flies atop the main building, with well-manicured lawns. Jefferson College opened its doors on January 7, 1811, as a preparatory school with 15 students. Funds from Congress, the state legislature, and private citizens allowed Jefferson College to become a full-fledged institution by 1817. This image shows the the West and East Wings, which still stand, and Raymond Hall, which also still stands. However, connecting structures between these buildings have been razed. Ca. 1907. "G. C. Mikesell in Scenery Hill, Pennsylvania" is stamped in the address section of the back.
