Abstract
A violent crime is a crime that involves the use of force or the threat of force. The most well-known violent crimes include murder, forcible rape, robbery, and assault. Each year, over one million serious violent crimes are reported to police in the United States. This entry defines the various types of violent crime, describes the methods through which data about violent crime are collected, reviews facts and figures about the amount of violent crime in the United States each year, and closes by discussing the various predictors of those violent crimes.
