Philosophy of Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

For more information, please see Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis Aims and Scope page.

Who Can Submit?

Anyone may submit an original article to be considered for publication in Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis provided he or she owns the copyright to the work being submitted or is authorized by the copyright owner or owners to submit the article. Authors are the initial owners of the copyrights to their works (an exception in the non-academic world to this might exist if the authors have, as a condition of employment, agreed to transfer copyright to their employer).

Editorial Process

Peer-reviewed Research Articles:

  • An editor determines whether the article merits external review and identifies typically two external reviewers. In some cases one or both may be members of the Editorial Board.
  • The identities of author(s) and editor are known to each other, but reviews are double blind: submissions are anonymized and the names of reviewers are not disclosed to authors.
  • Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis does not solicit recommendations for reviewers from authors, but authors can indicate potential referees whom they have reason to believe might not fairly review their work.
  • Once the editor has received two external reviews, they determine whether the article should be accepted (with our without revisions) or rejected. In cases where reviewer recommendations are split, the editor may seek a third review or determine the matter themself.
  • Authors should expect this decision (rejection, revise and resubmit, accept without revisions) around 6 weeks after initial submission.
  • When an article is revised and resubmitted, the editor makes the final decision without sending it out for a fresh round of reviews.
  • We aim to make this final decision within 2 weeks of receiving the revised manuscript.
  • Commentaries and book reviews are not subject to peer review but are approved by editors who work closely with the authors to ensure quality.

    Information for Reviewers

  • Editors will contact potential reviewers via email. This email will include an abstract to the article under review and a link asking you to accept or decline to serve as a reviewer.
  • Please do not accept to review an article if you believe or know the author to be a current or recent (last 4 years) departmental colleague, student, advisor, or co-author. Please also decline if you cannot provide a fair and unbiased review for any other reason.
  • If you accept, please provide a roughly one-page single-spaced review. We would appreciate constructive criticism that highlights weaknesses but that suggests improvements.
  • Articles under review should remain confidential and reviewers must not upload them to generative AI tools.
  • If a reviewer suspects research misconduct, they should immediately email a member of the editorial team.

    Authorship Criteria

    Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis considers an author to be a person who meets all four of the following criteria (adapted from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors):

  • Has made substantial contributions to the work in terms of its design or conception, or with regard to gathering or analyzing data;
  • Has been actively involved in drafting or reviewing the work;
  • Has given final approval to the version of the work submitted for publication;
  • Agrees to be held accountable for the published work in the event that questions concerning its accuracy or integrity arise.
  • Anyone who meets all four criteria should be listed as an author. If a person’s contributions to the work include some but not all of the criteria, they should be acknowledged by the author(s).

    In the case of co-authored works, the corresponding author should identify in the cover letter for the submission the contributions of each author.

    Use of Artificial Intelligence

    At time of submission, authors must disclose in their cover letter whether they used artificial intelligence (AI) to produce their work, and if so, how. At relevant places in the text of the submitted work, authors should also describe how they used AI. Authors are responsible for any plagiarism in their submission, including when AI has generated text or data, and are responsible for proper attribution and citations. General Submission Rules

    Submitted articles cannot have been previously published, nor be forthcoming in an archival journal or book (print or electronic). Please note: "publication" in a working-paper series does not constitute prior publication. In addition, by submitting material to Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis, the author is stipulating that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) and that he or she will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis. If you have concerns about the submission terms for Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis, please contact the editors.

    Formatting Requirements

    Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis has no general rules about the formatting of articles upon initial submission. However, research articles (double-blind peer reviewed) should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words, while book reviews and commentaries (subject to editorial review) typically fall within the 2,000 -- 5,000 word range. There are, however, rules governing the formatting of the final submission. See Final Manuscript Preparation Guidelines for details. Although bepress can provide limited technical support, it is ultimately the responsibility of the author to produce an electronic version of the article as a high-quality PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) file, or a Microsoft Word, WordPerfect or RTF file that can be converted to a PDF file.

    It is understood that the current state of technology of Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is such that there are no, and can be no, guarantees that documents in PDF will work perfectly with all possible hardware and software configurations that readers may have.
