Artifacts

The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana consists of approximately 12,000 artifacts, statuary, prints, paintings, broadsides, ephemera, photographs, philately, collectibles/miniatures, and numismatics. Materials are housed in 20 map case drawers, 30 cartons, and a variety of loose statuary, prints, and paintings. The collection also includes nearly 100 original manuscripts and the Claude Simmons collection which consists of approximately 12 bankers boxes of Lincoln related materials and scrapbooks. There are also approximately 15,000 books, journals, and pamphlets separated into two collections: the Lincoln Book Collection and the Civil War/Collateral Book Collection.

    This object is a caricature reminiscent of the plate ""Have you any flesh coloured silk stockings...?"" from E.W. Clay's racist satiric series, Life in Philadelphia, originally published in the late 1820s and early 1830s. Depicts an African-American man dressed as a woman, sitting in front of the counter of a dry goods store and inquiring about a pair of dark stockings which ""she"" holds. A smiling female sales clerk assists the customer while displaying a second pair of dark stockings. Bolts of fabric rest on shelves behind the clerk, socks and hosiery hang above, and a white female customer shops at the other end of the counter. It is printed on gray mount featuring the Sun Sculpture trademark.

    The stereograph features a black and white image of a statue featuring Abraham Lincoln standing by a kneeling male slave, his proper left hand raised as he is about to emancipate the slave. In his proper right hand, which rests on a bronze podium, Lincoln holds an unrolled copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. To the rear of the figures is a whipping post, chains, shackles, and a frayed whip. On each corner of the podium are fasces and around the base of the podium are thirteen stars. A bas-relief of George Washington decorates the angled face of the podium and a Union shield decorates the inner face of the podium. The albumen print is mounted on a gray card with rounded edges.
