
Artifacts
The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana consists of approximately 12,000 artifacts, statuary, prints, paintings, broadsides, ephemera, photographs, philately, collectibles/miniatures, and numismatics. Materials are housed in 20 map case drawers, 30 cartons, and a variety of loose statuary, prints, and paintings. The collection also includes nearly 100 original manuscripts and the Claude Simmons collection which consists of approximately 12 bankers boxes of Lincoln related materials and scrapbooks. There are also approximately 15,000 books, journals, and pamphlets separated into two collections: the Lincoln Book Collection and the Civil War/Collateral Book Collection.

Lincoln Flatboats Down the Mississippi

The object is a color clipping originally appearing in the February 1933 edition of American Boy Magazine. It features a reproduction of a painting by Albin Henning and depicts Abraham Lincoln as flatboatman. Two additional black and white clippings are affixed to hte verso that depict Lincoln reading and as a flatboatman. The clippings are attached to a cardboard backer.

The platinum print depicts a portrait image of Abraham Lincoln, taken by Alexander Hesler on 3 June 1860 in Springfield, Illinois. In 1881, George b. Ayers created the platinum print from the image's negative. The print's reverse has been signed by Ayers. [Ref: O-26.]

The portrait is printed in black and white on a matte surface and is affixed to an off-white card. Below the image, a personal inscription from Clara Hay, John Hay's wife, to Prof. Dr. Isidore Groedel appears.

Abraham Lincoln Entering Richmond, April 3d. 1865

The black and white engraving depicts President Abraham Lincoln walking through a crowd with his son, Tad, in Richmond, Virginia. The crowd is made up of white and black spectators who cheer as the President walks through the street. The engraving was enclosed in a brown wooden frame (which featured a sticker inscribed with the number 20) but was removed for preservation. The engraving has a vertical tear along its top and features light foxing in the upper two corners.

William Shakespeare Engraved by Hollis from the Chandos Portrait

The engraving features an oval portrait of William Shakespeare that was crafted after what is known as the Chandos Portrait of William Shakespeare. Surrounding the central image are smaller portraits of 19th century Shakespearian actors: Edward Loomis Davenport, Charlotte Cushman, Mary Amelia Warner, and William Macready. A fifth smaller image depicts a scene from the Shakespeare Jubilee. The engraving appears to have been taken from a bound volume, most likely John Tallis & Company's The Works of Williams Shakespeare Illustrated.

The transferware gravy boat depicts Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. The scene features Lincoln standing to the left of the Evergreen Cemetery Gatehouse. An American flag, army officers, and other officials stand behind Lincoln, who faces an audience. This scene is pictured on both side of the gravy boat, and a floral design appears on the object's handle. There are no markings on the gravy boat's bottom.

The commemorative lithograph/advertisement was published by the Sangamo Insurance Company shortly after the death of Abraham Lincoln. It advertises six illustrations of areas of interest in Illinois, including Lincoln's tomb, his Springfield home, and other sites of interest. After the death of Lincoln, the nation took interest in Lincoln's life, and many companies were quick to capitalize on this newfound curiosity. This broadside is an example of the commodification of such tourism.
