Description
This black and white illustration is of Joseph Hooker, an American Civil War general for the Union, chiefly remembered for his decisive defeat by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. Hooker is depicted standing with one hand resting on the top of his sword handle and the other hand holding his hat with a wall and pillar behind him. Hooker is depicted wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with star studded shoulder boards, a high collar, and a light color tasseled sash at his waist. Hooker's signature is depicted beneath the illustration. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
